Hallo an alle,

Nur zu Them and us + One tack mind.. habe ich kaum etwas. Da bräuchte ich dringend nocheinmal hilfe und im Forum steht darüber auch kaum etwas

Them and Us

Immigration in America
Why do people immigrate?
- immigrants leave their country because of economic reasons
- hope for better work
- setting up a new existence
- people are faszinated by the ideal of the American Dream
- attracted by liberty in America immigrants escape from absolutism, poverty and lack of opportunity

Historical immigration:

- 1750-1850 Black slaves came in chaines to America. They worked on the rice and tabacco fields
- 1790 Population in America: 4 Mio underneath 3.2 Europeans and 800000 slaves
-1860 Chinese came to build the western railroads. They worked for less money so the Americans feared for their jobs
-1865 America advertised for soldiers. Underneath there are a lot of germans
-1880-1910 Irishmen, Italians and Germans came because of famine and the failed Revolutions

Nowadays:

2002 279 million people populated America.
2003 The whole expected number of illegal immigrants is 5 million people.
2006 The United States accepted more legal immigrants as permanent residents than all other countries in the world combined
Nearly 14 million immigrants entered the United States from 2000 to 2010

Multicultural society in the USA

Pro
- people from one culture have the possibilty of learning from people with other heritages
- they can exchange experience -> intellectual improvement in society
- people of poor countrys have the possibility to live a better life
- based on civil rights
- equality of all people
- benefit through cultural exchange
- learn from the other culture
- learn to respect other cultures

Con
-no social integration
-no national unity
-no assimilation
-fragmentation of society
-creation of cultural ghettos

Today

- African –Americans, Native Americans, Asians and Hispanics aren´t able to assimilate in
the American mainstream as easily as Europeans
’ non- white groups stress their culture and heritage
’ Europeans did the same with their culture and heritage
’ division ’ American society not longer seen as a “ melting pot “ but as a
“ salad bowl “

- In some areas the white population is no longer the majority ( e.g. California)
’ tensions following the attempt to introduce English as the official language

- Supporters of English as the official language believe it´s important for the well- being of the
nation that every citizen speaks the same language

- Many Hispanics and Asians want to keep their cultural identity, so they go on speaking their language

- Tensions because the WASP ( white Anglo- Saxon Protestants ) don´t want to give up it´s
cultural dominance

- Fear among African- Americans to lose their economic power through the new arriving Latin
Americans and Asians.

Civil Rights

Facts:

Definition: A civil right is a statutory right which is given by the state for his citizens.
The right to vote and all other basic rights are civil rights.

Civil Rights are rights which relate to the relationship between state and citizen and not to the relationship among the citizens.
Civil Rights are only for the citizens of the particular state and not for every human of the world (like the human rights).

Example against civil and human rights ( Unterrichtsbezogen)
- Abu Ghraib
- Civil war in Somalia
- Panama

Den Themen kann ich zustimmen, aber dass das "nicht so viel" ist?
Ich glaube, das ist Ansichtssache! Ich finde, das ist schon ganz reichlich zu lernen! Augenzwinkern
