Ich habe schon folgendes zu American Dream ( Q1)
The American Dream :
Ideas:
- “from rages to riches”
( “from dishwasher to millionaire”)
- Melting pot ( people melt together from different origins and ethnic groups )
- Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness
( The politic aspect of the American Dream canters around the ideas of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness : all people have the right to purse their goals with a minimum of state control. )
- Democracy, freedom, equality for everyone
- To overcome the social gap, climb up the social ladder
- “ government of the people, by the people, for the people” -> Abraham Lincoln
Key expressions:
Melting pot:
Immigrants from different countries and backgrounds have melted into a homogenous society
Multiculturalism:
Concept questions the idea of the melting pot and gives more space to individuality. Two social concepts compete ( konkurrieren ): assimilation ( Anpassung ) and pluralism ( Nebeneinander herleben in der Gesellschaft )
Individualism:
Central concepts in the way American see themselves and are viewed by others. Importance of self-reliance and responsibility: If you work hard, you prosper – If you fall. It’s your own fault!
- Reason for unrestricted ( uneingeschränkt) capitalism, limited welfare
Symbols:
Independence Day (Declaration of Independence):
- On July 4,1776
- 13 British colonies in America became independence by adopting the Declaration of Independence.
The Stars and Stripes:
- American flag, a ubiquitous ( allgegenwärtig ) symbol for the United States and it’s achievements
Ellis Island:
- Main port of entry for immigrants from Europe between 1892 and 1954
-> the US is a country of immigrants
Uncle Sam:
- Personification of the US. The American government and the American people
Historical background:
New Canaan:
- Radical Puritans left England in the 17th century to settle in America ( they were persecuted in their home country ) -> America seemed to be the promised land of the bible
- Puritan ethnics still influence American society :
Importance of community, work, education, individual freedom, strict moral principles with regard to alcohol and sexuality.
Manifest destiny:
- Americans feel commissioned to democrize the world !
- America -> “nation of future”
Civil Rights Movement:
Slavery in the US-roots and history (1607-1865):
- Slavery trade began between Africa and America ( especially transported to the South of US) -> wanted them for plantation work
- Not all of the blacks survived the trip on boat
- Declaration of Independence: “all men are created equal !! -> does not include black people, because they were regarded as no citizens, but a welcome source ( economic factor )
Civil War (1861-1865)
- Concentrated on moral questions
- Antislavery associations were formed
- Essential economic and political power
è South wanted to leave the US to keep slavery for their plantations
è North had a growing industry (industrialization), enough workers (e.g. European immigrants) -> victory for the North (were more advanced, had methods and arms)
è Slavery was abolished!!!
Martin Luther King:
- Leader of the fight for equal rights, fought with non-violent action
è Famous speech “ I have a dream”
optimistic about people living together, believes in a “colour – blind America”
Malcom X. / Black Power Movement:
- Malcom wanted more rights for black people and was racial against whites and hated every white person
- Formed Muslim organization
- Wanted to be separated from the whites, blacks have to concentrate on their own business
- Aggressive
- Changed his opinion later, was killed then

Was cool wäre wäre was zu dem Referendum bzgl. Schottlands Unabhängigkeit.

Steht nicht drin, dass hat sich ja auch erst die letzten Wochen ergeben.
Aber wir hatten mal die National assemblies angesprochen. Ich fänd das Thema cool weil mir da total viel einfallen würde ^^
