The Murderer (Ray Bradbury)

deals with:
technological progress and the negative consequences (how the electronic controls our life)
being available all day long (mobile phones, Internet, …)
being addicted to something

summary:
page 19:
a psychiatrist is in a lunatic asylum (Irrenanstalt)
there is music everywhere and his wrist radio buzzes, he talks to his son Lee
he gets the note that a prisoner was delivered to an interview chamber
the doctor enters, but the prisoner tells him to leave
the prisoner smiles which frightens the doctor (“a very sunny, pleasant warm thing[here: the smile], a thing that shed bright light upon the room”), and he feels uncomfortable
the man tells him he turned the radio off because the constant music annoys him
Albert Brock (the prisoner) takes the doctor‘s wrist radio and destroys it

page 20:
Brock starts telling that he killed the telephone and then the television
he started hating the telephone when his uncle called it the Ghost Machine, which scared him – he thinks the telephone takes your soul and changes everything
he hates the fact that everyone can call you at any time
he also hates the voices and sounds and pictures and ads you see all the time

page 21:
then he killed the intercommunication system which made it impossible for his co-workers to work, then he killed his wrist radio
lots of people called him when he was in his car so he destroyed the radio transmitter by putting French chocolate ice cream into it (French ice cream because it‘s his favourite flavour and he thought what‘s good enough for him, is good enough for the transmitter)
he felt better when there was silence

page 22:
he rented a machine which shut off every wrist radio in his environment
not being in touch with “the reality” made the men freak out and police came and fined him and then send him home
the doctor asks why he didn‘t try it in a legal way
Brock says he did, but people only laughed and then they went to far
being annoyed all day isn‘t charming to him at all
at home he made plans to kill his house, because he had an electronic house

page 23:
he was annoyed by the machines which followed him or told him what to do
so one day be bought a pistol and shot his front door, the stove, the telephone...
his woman arrived and she put him into the Office of Mental Health
he doesn‘t regret anything, he says his name will go down in history and that he started a revolt – billions of people know him because he was in the news
Brock leaves the room and goes into his private cell, he wants to enjoy the silence
the doctor says he doesn‘t know the diagnosis yet
he goes back to his office where Brock‘s words are demonstrated: the telephone rings, the intercom flashed and his wrist radio buzzes
